Testimonials from the Sat., June 11, 2005 workshop: Master Gohring: WOW! The Stick Fighting Workshop with Guro Rene Rodriguez was one of the best five hours I have spent since Shirfu Christophe Clark. Being an orange sash and just learning the form, I didn't know just what to expect in picking up a weapon. I was surprised to see so many correlations to the different aspects of the form including Nei Kung. The most impressive moment was meeting Guro Rene. We were about ready to pick up our sticks and he actually walked up to us and introduced himself. I about fell over when I realized who he was as I gave him our standard greeting and said how much I was looking forward to his class. I am beginning to see that the real masters who really do know their art really are the most humble ones. His ability to take me from knowing nothing through learning some basics in stick and knife warfare was incredible. I have always wondered what I would do in such a predicament and now I believe I wouldn't just give in without some sort of a fight. Sticks are something you can find almost anywhere and knowing how to use them could save a life. I would highly recommend anyone who wanted to know how to protect themselves to take a class from Guro Rodriguez. Hope he will be able to return to teach us more or at least refine what he has given us as I know I will be there, only I will introduce myself to him first this time ;-) Thank you Sifu, for this wonderful and valuable opportunity! Jan T.
Master Gohring: Thank you for bringing Guro Rodriguez to the school to introduce us to the Filipino Martial Arts. I thoroughly enjoyed the workshop, another in a great series I have had the pleasure and honor of attending .I don't really know what I was expecting, but I was so excited that I couldn't sleep Friday night in Anticipation. Had I known how fantastic it was going to be I would have lost a great deal more sleep in anticipation. Guro Rodriguez' teaching technique seemed well suited and complimentary to your system. I felt at ease although I admit I was out of my element (despite growing up playing with sticks and knives). I wish the workshop had bee two days though, so much GOOD information. Keep bringing these great instructors in! I appreciate the exposure to other martial arts as well as other instructors. Thanks again for another GREAT learning experience. Sincerely, Thomas T.
Master Gohring: I also enjoyed the workshop. I think that Guro did a good job of balancing things. He started on time, gave some background and shifted effortless between the sticks and the knife. The interludes of his showing real techniques broke up the workout sessions well and allowed us to see to what training in this art could eventually lead. Tthe workshop was also beneficial because it provided five hours of exercise, allowed me to get to know other school members better, and provided a fascinating peek into a totally different martial art. Beryl S. Master Gohring: The workshop was great. I'm glad I attended. It's nice to get exposure to other martial arts and make comparisons to the similarities and differences between the other art and T'ai Chi. I agree wtih Guro Rodriguez's assessment -- it's not every instructor that would invite someone else into his school to teach. I definitely appreciate you doing that. I am interested in the DVD, but will have to wait for next paycheck to purchase it. Also, I mistakenly referred to Guro Rodriguez as "Rene" instead of "Guro" because I was in a rush with a question and forgot the proper teacher term. I'd like to extend an apology to Guro Rodriguez and let him know I didn't mean any disrespect. Andy P.
